POCKET FAQ’S
HERE’S OUR MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED
Don’t see yours listed below? We’d love to hear from you!
BABY SEEMS TO BE SITTING VERY LOW IN THE POCKET, HOW CAN I POSITION HER HIGHER?
Place baby high on your shoulder when positioning them into the carrier, so that they settle in on your chest. Their head should be resting right at or just beneath your collar bone. Often, parents will start with baby in this position leaving them sitting too low. It takes a few tries to get it right and baby may not be used to being held vertically so give them a chance to settle in before giving up. They may fuss at first, but happily settle.
CAN I BREASTFEED WHILE WEARING IT?
You sure can! With some practice, you and baby will quickly figure out your favorite position. Try nursing in the NüRoo Pocket while seated first. Lift your breast and guide baby to latch. The wide interior pocket provides plenty of room to angle baby to either side.
CAN I WEAR BABY FORWARD FACING?
No, Baby should always be chest to chest with mom in the NüRoo Pocket. This is where all the advantages of Skin-to-skin happen. When used as a carrier, baby should still be held in the vertical position facing mom with their legs frogged or in the M position.
HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN THE CARRIER SUPPORT?
No, Baby should always be chest to chest with mom in the NüRoo Pocket. This is where all the advantages of Skin-to-skin happen. When used as a carrier, baby should still be held in the vertical position facing mom with their legs frogged or in the M position.
HOW DO I KNOW MY SIZE WHEN PREGNANT?
Sizing is based on your pre-pregnancy bust and dress size. Check out our size chart on the shop page to find your best fit.
CAN THIS BE WORN WITH TWINS? MULTIPLES?
You can use the pocket for coverage while practicing skin-to-skin with twins or triplets so long as they fit ‘visible and kissable’ in the neckline and you are seated. It is not recommended that you be on your feet with more than one baby in the NüRoo Pocket.
I”M AN ADOPTIVE PARENT, ARE SKIN-TO-SKIN + THE POCKET STILL BENEFICIAL FOR ME AND MY BABY?
Absolutely! Full chest-to-chest contact between you and baby is the only thing required to stimulate the c-afferent nerves. When stimulated, a hormonal cascade delivers all the physiological benefits that skin-to-skin offers. It’s a wonderful way for all parents to bond with your baby as it increases levels of oxytocin in both the baby and the wearer, creating a “relaxation and well-being” response. This aids mom (or dad) in responding with nurturing and affectionate behaviors towards baby, they become more sensitive and aware of baby’s needs, and leads to feeling more confident about parenting skills!
CAN I USE THE POCKET WITH MY PREEMIE IN THE NICU?
Yes! The Pocket supports the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and is approved for use in the NICU with pre-term infants. When your baby is stable and free of any intervention, meaning lines or tubes, you can wear the Pocket with baby and be up and on your feet, hands free. If your preemie is not yet free of lines or tubes, you can still wear the Pocket, but would want to do so while seated. In this case, you’d put the Pocket on, position baby properly on your chest for skin to skin contact and instead of putting baby in the internal pocket, you’d simply pull the inside panel over baby, then secure the outside panel across your body to keep baby secure and supported.
IS THERE A MINIMUM WEIGHT BABY MUST BE TO USE THE CARRIER?
We’re proud to say that even the smallest of babies are safely worn in the Pocket. As soon as your little one is cleared for skin-to-skin contact, you may begin using the Pocket. If your baby is in the NICU and tethered to lines and tubes, you need not place them inside the interior pocket as you will only be practicing skin-to-skin while seated. You can simply wrap and secure the two outer panels around you and baby for coverage. Once they have outgrown the need for monitors, you are ready to use the shirt as a carrier and should always place baby in the interior pocket when wearing them!
SHOULD MY BABY BE CLOTHED OR ONLY IN A DIAPER WHEN IN THE POCKET?
If you are wearing the Pocket for skin to skin contact, baby should be wearing only a diaper. If you’re using the Pocket simply as a hands free carrier, baby can certainly have clothes on! Because of the snug fit of the shirt, and to prevent overheating, baby should only have one layer of clothing on while in the Pocket. However, you could throw a sweater or jacket over the Pocket if you’d like some extra warmth. Just make sure baby is always visible and kissable and you’re good to go!
SWADDLER FAQ’S
HOW LONG WILL MY BABY FIT IN THE SWADDLE?
Our swaddle fits baby from birth to 28 inches long. Every baby grows at a different rate, so use is typically up to 6 months. You should discontinue swaddling with arms inside the pocket as soon as baby shows signs of rolling, but can swaddle with arms out + use your swaddle as a transitioner for as long as baby likes.
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN BABY IS READY TO GRADUATE TO THE NEXT SIZE?
Baby should have plenty of room to move and flex their legs freely, which is important for preventing hip dysplasia. When they are kicking and reaching the seam at the end of each pocket with legs straight, it’s time to move to them to the next size.
WHAT IS A SWADDLE TRANSITIONER?
No, Baby should always be chest to chest with mom in the NüRoo Pocket. This is where all the advantages of Skin-to-skin happen. When used as a carrier, baby should still be held in the vertical position facing mom with their legs frogged or in the M position.
WHAT IS THE BEST POSITION FOR BABYS ARMS?
Babies are inherently used to crossing their arms over their chest, similar to their fetal tuck position inside the womb. However, placing arms at their sides or near their face for self-soothing are also considered “correct” placement, so we suggest you experiment + let baby decide what they prefer!
HOW SHOULD BABY BE DRESSED UNDERNEATH?
Our signature fabric offers breathability and moisture-wicking properties to help with temperature regulation. However, baby should be dressed appropriately for the season. In winter months or colder climates, baby could have pajamas or a onesie on. In summer months or warmer climates, baby could simply be wearing a diaper when swaddled.
CAN I SWADDLE MY PREEMIE?
There is no minimum weight requirement and we’re proud to say we’ve had some of the tiniest little ones safely snuggled up in our swaddler. If your baby is ready to be swaddled, meaning your doctor or health provider has cleared them for doing so, or is wrapping them in swaddle blankets, they’re sure to love the NuRoo Swaddler!
BABY IS BREAKING FREE FROM THE SWADDLE, HELP!
There are two easy to fix reasons why baby gets their arms out of the swaddle. The first is that when they are swaddled, they are laid too far down on the swaddle so that the fabric meets their neck or the back of their head. The top of the swaddle should meet the top of their shoulders, so that they are swaddled from the shoulders down. When the swaddle is around their neck, it can create loose fabric + a way for baby to wiggle their hands up and out. The second reason is that parents often worry about wrapping baby too tightly and end up wrapping much too loose, allowing baby room to play Houdini. Our 4-way stretch fabric will always provide the proper amount of flexibility for baby so it eliminates the fear of wrapping too tight. When securing the swaddle, pull the left panel across baby’s chest in a motion that is down and away from their face. This will leave the landing pad in the proper position to pull the right panel across and also down. Be sure they’re wrapped snug through chest and belly! Want a visual cue? Check out an example of what baby should look like when correctly swaddled. along with examples of common mistakes. Or, this video on how to swaddle baby.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY SWADDLE?
Simply toss it in the wash with like colors and tumble dry. Make sure the tabs are securely closed to prevent snagging or getting other things (like towels or burp cloths) stuck to the Velcro. Piece of cake!
HOW DO I RELEASE THE GROW SEAM?
Turn your swaddler inside out to find printed instructions on how to release the grow seam. Or, check out this instructional video where we show you step by step.
HOW SHOULD I POSITION BABY FOR SLEEP?
Swaddled babies should always be placed on their back for safe sleep.
